According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mosquitoes are the primary vectors for diseases that claim over 725,000 lives each year. Malaria alone accounted for an estimated 608,000 deaths in 2022, with the majority occurring in the WHO African Region. These insects act as biological vehicles, carrying parasites, bacteria, and viruses from one host to another without getting sick themselves.The transmission process occurs when a female mosquito bites a human to ingest blood for egg production. During this process, she injects saliva containing anticoagulants into the skin. If the mosquito is infected, pathogens like the Plasmodium parasite or the Dengue virus enter the human bloodstream through this saliva. This efficient delivery system allows diseases to spread rapidly through dense populations.Beyond malaria, mosquitoes transmit yellow fever, West Nile virus, and lymphatic filariasis, which causes painful swelling and disability. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation frequently highlights that the mosquito's ability to adapt to urban environments makes it a persistent global threat. While large predators are easier to track and avoid, the microscopic nature of the pathogens carried by mosquitoes makes them significantly harder to control.
