Despite looking light and airy, a typical cumulus cloud contains about 1.1 million pounds of water. It stays afloat because its weight is spread across a massive volume, and the warm rising air beneath it provides enough lift to keep the droplets suspended.

To calculate the weight of a cloud, researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) use the density of a typical cumulus cloud, which is about 0.5 grams of water per cubic meter. A standard cumulus cloud is roughly one kilometer long, one kilometer wide, and one kilometer tall. This results in a total volume of one billion cubic meters of air and water vapor.By multiplying the density by the volume, scientists determine that such a cloud contains 500,000,000 grams, or 500,000 kilograms, of water. In the imperial system, this equals approximately 1.1 million pounds. This is roughly equivalent to the weight of 100 school buses or two blue whales floating in the sky.The reason these massive structures do not fall immediately to Earth is due to the physics of buoyancy and surface area. The water is distributed as millions of microscopic droplets so small that gravity has a negligible effect on them compared to the upward force of air currents. Additionally, the cloud is less dense than the dry air surrounding it, allowing it to remain suspended until the droplets coalesce into larger, heavier rain seeds.
