Earth's climate system is driven by an energy imbalance where the tropics receive significantly more solar radiation than the polar regions. To maintain thermal equilibrium, the atmosphere and oceans must transport approximately 5 to 6 petawatts of heat toward the poles. Tropical cyclones, which include hurricanes and typhoons, play a critical role in this heat flux by converting thermal energy from warm ocean waters into kinetic energy.A single mature hurricane can release energy at a rate of 50 to 200 trillion watts, which is equivalent to about half of the total global electrical generating capacity.
